The day of after Christmas is popularly known as Boxing Day. This is not because their were large numbers of pugilism matches on this day but rather because it was the day that tradesman, local villagers, villeins etc received their Christmas 'box'. This verbiage is still extant in the giving of a Christmas Box, or tip, today usually money, to doormen, concierges etc.
